Championship Guide

Please ask our Championships Committee if you need more information about the following
There are a number of events throughout the athletic season that members are encouraged to attend. Some of these will be restricted to those athletes that have qualified from previous events, while others are open to all athletes, ( a small entry fee may be charged for some events )

Our Friday Night Centre Championships run from September to March with short breaks in between to accommodate other programmed events that also use the facility. We have a small break over Christmas an usually return back about the second or third week in January.
Please Check the notice Board each Week.

The Tuggerah Lakes Mingara Little Athletics Centre encourages all athletes to attend Centre Gala Days throughout the season at neighbouring centres. This is a great opportunity for the athletes to compete in a friendly atmosphere against athletes from centres that they may otherwise not have the chance to meet. Usually there is a small administration fee to enter Gala Day events, and they are held usually on Saturday or Sunday all throughout the season. It is unusual for a weekend to pass by where there is not a Gala Day held somewhere close by. Notification of attendance is usually requested by the hosting centre at least a week in advance.

The Trans Tasman Challenge is an open event for the Under 11 and Under 12 age groups only.
The Challenge is held each year in January each year and alternates between Sydney and Auckland with a team having to travel overseas to compete. Usually the Competition is held in Sydney if the January falls in an odd year, and Auckland if the January falls in an even year. When they are held in Sydney there usually is a large number of athletes competing for the limited number of positions available on the team. ( 30 athletes in each age group and each sex). When the team travels to New Zealand the cost is around $2,000 and is fully inclusive. Costs for the Sydney competition is a lot less. All successful athletes MUST purchase the team uniform if successful in being selected at the Trans Tasman Trials. In the even years, Athletes may also travel to New Zealand as a reserve for the team. ( all athletes that take part in the Trans Tasman Trials can travel to New Zealand and take part in all activities the team is involved in EXCEPT the Trans Tasman Challenge)
There are a number of bulletins to keep all families and athletes informed
( sample bulletin number 1 from 2007/8 season here )
Registrations for the trials are in October
The Trans Tasman Trials are held in November
The Team is announced in December
The Challenge is held early January each year

N.S.W State Relays are held in November each season at the Sydney Athletics Centre Homebush.
This is an open event and Age managers and The Championships Committee will be looking for athletes interested in competing at these championships. This is one of the very few Teams Championships, where all four athletes combine their talents in Track and Field events. There are the usual Running Relays as well as Field Relays, where athletes compete in events such as Discus or Long Jump, where points are awarded for individual results. The points for the team are then added together and the team with the most points win. It is important that once you commit to a State Relays event, you must show up on the day. The Whole Team cannot compete if one or more members do not show up.

The Central Coast Zone Championships are usually held on the first weekend in December each year, and are the first of a series of qualifying events that culminate in the State Championships at the end of the season. The Zone Championships are open entry level events, where athletes compete against other athletes from other centres in the Central Coast Zone. The first three placed athletes in the finals of each event receive a medal and the top eight athletes all receive a "Finalist" ribbon. The first four athletes in each event ( except for the Under 7 age group) qualify for the next level of competition.( the Region One Championships ) Our centre pays the entry fee for the athletes to attend the Zone Championships. If you nominate for an event you must show up! The Central Coast Zone is made up 6 centres. Three from Gosford City and three from Wyong Shire.

The N.S.W State Multi-Event Championships is an open event championships where athletes compete in a variety of track and field events and accumulate points for results. The athletes with the highest total point score in each age group and sex at the end of the weekend is announced the winner. The location of these Championships changes each season and is hosted usually by country centres. While the points are added up throughout the weekend and posted up on notice boards as events are finalised, you may purchase a point score handbook from the head office of Little Athletics N.S.W.     Check what events are contested here...

The State Track and Field Championships are usually held the second weekend in march each year at the Sydney Olympic Athletic Centre Homebush. These championships are the final championships for the season for most athletes. Only those athletes that have qualified from the Regional Championships may compete. For an athlete to represent our centre at the State Championships is a great achievement for the Athlete and the Parents, Coaches, and Officials that have made this possible. The top 3 athletes in each event receive a medal.
At the end of these championships a small number of Under 13 athletes are selected to be part of the N.S.W Team.

The Australian National Championships are usually held in April each year. This event is only open to those athletes that were chosen at the State Championships. Approximately 22 athletes in the Under 13 age groups are hand picked by a panel of selectors to represent N.S.W at the National Championships. Winning at state does not mean you will be picked for the State Team. The athletes picked are the ones that should gain the most amount of points for N.S.W at the Nationals. The National Championships are a point score championships that are run similarly to the State Multi-event Championships. The Captains for the N.S.W team are the winners of the State Multi in the under 15 age groups.
Check Guidelines for State Team Selection here

At the end of the season our centre has its presentation day, ( usually early April ), where athletes receive awards for recognition of their individual achievements for the season.
All athletes that compete at 65% or more of our Friday competition nights will receive a participation trophy.
Athletes that compete on every competition night for the season will also receive a 100% trophy.
There are many other awards that fill up the remainder of the evening, and it is an enjoyable time for all.

The choice is open for all members (depending on their age) to participate at what ever level they aspire to.
The Tuggerah Lakes Mingara Little Athletics Centre encourages all athletes to enter and compete in as many competitions and gala days during the season as possible, and to always……
